The Department of Building Engineering is mainly responsible for the teaching of subject area requisites for undergraduates of architectural engineering direction of civil engineering and related courses for other programs of the College of Civil Engineering. Besides, it also undertakes the teaching, training and scientific research tasks for master's candidates majoring in structural engineering.

There are 16 teachers in the Department, including 3 professors, 11 associate professors (research associates) and 2 lecturers; 8 teachers have doctoral degree and 7 have master's degree; there is 1 doctoral supervisor and 10 master supervisors. There are about 120 to 160 undergraduates majoring in architectural engineering direction of civil engineering in each grade. Prof. Huang Jizhuo serves as the dean of the Department, and Assoc. Prof. Wang Zhibin as the deputy dean of the Department.

In the past five years, the Department has undertaken and completed a number of provincial and university-level teaching research and reform projects, with many teachers having won the first, second or third prizes for excellent teaching; besides, in terms of scientific research, it has undertaken 5 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, more than 20 provincial, ministerial and departmental scientific research projects, and more than 30 enterprise-sponsored projects, with more than 10 national invention patents and utility model patents granted, and more than 90 papers published.
