The Department of Road and Bridge Engineering is mainly responsible for the teaching of subject area requisites for undergraduates in transportation civil engineering direction of the civil engineering program and other related courses of the whole college, and the scientific research in road and bridge engineering direction. Student enrollment began in 1972 for the four-year "Road and Bridge Engineering" undergraduate program of Fuzhou University, which is a long history. It has trained nearly 2,000 qualified graduates, most of which have been assigned to important positions in the transportation industry inside and outside Fujian Province, with positive contributions made to the construction of highways, railways and urban roads and transportation inside and outside Fujian Province.

Now there are about 60 to 120 students in each grade of transportation civil engineering direction of the civil engineering program, with a total of about 300 undergraduates in school. The Department has 16 teachers, including 2 professors, 10 associate professors and 4 lecturers. These teachers all have received postgraduate education, and include 8 doctors and 2 postdoctors; and six of them are master supervisors. Prof. Gu Yin severs as the dean of the Department, and Prof. Que Yun as the deputy dean of the Department.

In the past five years, the faculty of the Department have undertaken and completed a number of provincial and university-level teaching research and reform projects, among which Bridge Engineering is a provincial excellent course (in cooperation with the Institute of Bridge and Tunnel Engineering); in recent years, they have won a first prize for teaching achievements and a special prize for excellent teaching materials, and many first, second and third prizes for excellent teaching. As for scientific research, teachers of the Department have undertaken and completed a total of more than 40 projects supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China and Natural Science Foundation of Fujian Province, and enterprise-sponsored transportation science and technology development projects. In the past five years, the scientific research funds received have reached more than CNY 6 million cumulatively. Eight sci-tech achievements have won the first, second or third prizes of provincial sci-tech progress award, and 4 academic monographs and more than 50 papers have been published.

Reviewing the past and looking forward to the future, the faculty of the Department is spirited and enthusiastic to make efforts in the overall building for disciplines of transportation civil engineering direction of civil engineering, actively strives to build the Department of Road and Bridge Engineering of Fuzhou University into a talent training and scientific research base for transportation civil engineering in Fujian Province, the Western Taiwan Straits Economic Zone and even across China, with a view to making greater and more positive contributions to the construction of China's transportation industry and social and economic development in the new century.
